My question to you today is:
What makes a book captivating to you?
a) Is it protagonist- do they grab you and make you want to get to know them better.
b) The antagonist- do you want to shake them until they get with the program.
c) The story line- Is the story so good you don't want the book to end.
For many authors the protagonist is the one that evoke life in the story. I have written books where I am totally in love with the protagonist and it can be a hinderance. When a story line is to go into a different direction the author that's in love is hesitant to change course, and this can throw the story line off.

The plotting must be riveting, whether the character is spoilt, bad tempered (manners) or egotistical. They must be a conflict or change that that is taking place. This should intensify as the story moves on. You don't want the main character to be at a standstill, there should be changes; evolving.
The character must be ever changing and the readers should connect somehow with the character. A bore will be lost in the story.
